Whitby Jet and Lapis Lazuli
Lapis Lazuli is a natural deep blue mineral that has been popular for thousands of years, prized for its intense colour, versatility and spiritual significance in many cultures.
It polishes up wonderfully and has been used throughout history to make beads, jewellery, ornaments and carvings. During the Renaissance it was ground into a powder to make blue pigment for oil paintings and used by famous artists. It was considered a sacred colour and the ground pigment was even more expensive than gold. The ancient Egyptians used it to decorate tombs and masks and even in make-up. This captivating gem has unsurprisingly stood the test of time and here at Abbey Jet it continues to be very popular. We source our Lapis Lazuli in its raw form and cut and polish it by hand before making the finished piece.
