Whitby Jet and Lapis Lazuli
Lapis Lazuli is a natural blue mineral, prized for thousands of years by many for its intense colour, versatility and spiritual significance in many cultures.
It polishes up wonderfully and has been used as a raw material throughout history to make beads, jewellery, ornaments and carvings. During the Renaissance it was made into a pigment and used in oil paintings. The colour was considered sacred and the ground pigment was more expensive than gold. The ancient Egyptians decorated tombs and masks and made make-up with it. This captivating gem has unsurprisingly stood the test of time and here at Aurora Jet it is very popular. We source raw Lapis and cut and polish it by hand before making the finished piece.
