Whitby Jet and Blue John
Blue John is a scarce variety of mineral, a type of Fluor-Spar which contains a stunning rainbow of colours.
Many shades of blue, purple and yellow can be found within Blue John and every stone is unique. We source Blue John from the old mines of Castleton, Derbyshire. This is the only place on Earth where it can be found. Deep inside the limestone, the Blue John forms as veins and nodules which are expertly hand mined to preserve the structure and colour bands. Initially discovered by the Romans, this gemstone is now a popular choice within jewellery, either on its own or combined with other gemstones. We think it combines very well with Whitby Jet so we often pair the two stones within our jewellery, producing a lovely colour contrast between light and dark.
